The idea of forming a Hindley Community Allotment and Garden Society came to Eric Alker over two years ago when he spotted a piece of land locked land to the rear of 19 Belmont road, Hindley. He contacted John Davies and a number of other tenants who were interested in forming an allotment society. Eric and John working with the Community Engagement Team of Wigan and Leigh Housing and also Wigan Council applied to lease the land and form Hindley Community Allotment and Garden Society. Finally after many negotiations and obtaining planning consent access to the land was obtained in June 2012.
From the 21st of July 2012 up to the official opening on the 15th October 2012 by Ashley Crumbley Chief Executive of Wigan and Leigh Housing, the land has been transformed into working allotments growing all kinds of winter vegetables with a Poly tunnel, Community Garden and in the process of being completed raised beds for disabled use. This being funded by the members, donations from neighbours around the allotments and grants from The Better Neighbourhood Fund, Wigan Small Grants, and with the help of Councillor James Eccles Churton Brighter Borough Fund.
Even in the short time the Society has been active a sense of community has grown both with the members and the people living around the allotment site. We know this will flourish and grow in the months and years to come.
